Understanding the interplay
between brain injury
and mental health

Empowering U on its
commitment to holistic care

At Empowering U, we are dedicated to understanding and valuing the profound impact that brain injuries can have on an individual's mental health. Our values are deeply rooted in acknowledging the emotional challenges faced by individuals affected by brain injuries and being committed to providing personalised and comprehensive support to address their mental health needs effectively.

Our team of experienced case managers provide guidance and support to those seeking assistance in navigating the challenges of life after a brain injury.

What is mental health and how does this relate to brain injury?

Mental health refers to our emotional and psychological well-being, and how we interact with others and handle life challenges. This is often described as an individual who may experience ongoing stress, worry and anxiety which in turn impacts their mental health negatively.

Our case managers are here to help individuals who may be experiencing these mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), by providing support, resources, and guidance to help them navigate their challenges and access the care they need.

Brain injury and mental health are separate diagnoses that can either co-exist or remain distinct from each other. This intersection can arise as all of our psychological, emotional, cognitive and behavioural functions originate from the brain. At Empowering U, we believe that it is important to recognise that a brain injury can have an impact on an individual’s mental health.

Following on from a brain injury, it is a common occurrence for individuals who have sustained a brain injury to undergo changes in their behaviour, thinking, and emotional state. Individuals may develop symptoms of depression, anxiety, irritability, and difficulty coping with daily life. Therefore, while brain injury and mental health are distinct, they can often coexist, and addressing both aspects is crucial in providing comprehensive care and support to individuals who have experienced a brain injury.

The Interplay Between Brain Injury and Mental Well-being

At Empowering U, we take pride in our association with Headway, a reputable UK charity committed to supporting individuals impacted by brain injuries. As highlighted by Headway, certain conditions may surface as individuals grapple with the full repercussions of their injury, potentially intensifying existing symptoms. Recognising the intrinsic connection between mental health and brain injury is fundamental, spotlighting the imperative nature of extending meaningful support to those navigating these challenges.

With Barry Lehane overseeing our rehabilitation and case management endeavors, and Jenny Mitchell guiding our business operations, our close ties to Headway reflect our commitment to this cause. Our dedicated case managers are also proud associates of the charity.

In the wake of Action for Brain Injury Week 2024, Headway brought attention to the profound impact of brain injury through their "A Life Re-Written" campaign. Their research unveiled that a significant 78% of brain injury survivors had to adapt their life goals following their injury. Additionally, Headway's findings highlighted that 60% of brain injury survivors reported a decline in their social lives post-injury.

The campaign underscores the critical need for support and understanding for those navigating the complexities of life after a brain injury.
